As many of the exterior ornament pieces at the Atlantis Theme Park Hotel and Resort in the Bahamas were conceived and fabricated by MJM Studios in S. Kearney, New Jersey, The Atlantis Dragon that adorns the main lobby was also an MJM creation. The original model was sculpted out of modeling clay. The rubber mold was made using Smooth-On’s PMC-724 urethane rubber. MJM artisans used the versatility of the rubber to their full advantage in making this complex mold. Being able to vary the thixotropy of the rubber solved some challenging problems. Into the mold, MJM cast Matrix NEO mixed with pigment and bronze powder to create a casting that looks just like bronze. A chemical patina was applied to give the finished casting an aged bronze effect.
