The Pearl S. Buck House, located in Bucks County, PA, promotes the legacy of Pearl S. Buck by preserving and interpreting her National Historic Landmark home to educate the public and develop cross-cultural appreciation, opportunities for children and families, and worldwide partnerships.
James McGinniss, a renowned sculptor in the area, was contacted to create a tribute to the spirit of the house through sculpture. Jim's piece, entitled 'Jump'N For Joy' was designed to reflect a girl jumping rope in mid-leap.
Using a steel wire and mesh understructure, Jim constructed a basic shape. Shell Shock™ brushable liquid plastic was applied to the outside of the steel armature to provide a rigid 'skin'. The final coats of resin were combined with bronze powder to create a 'cold cast bronze' finish. The result is a lightweight (48 lb.) sculpture which looks exactly like cast bronze.
Mr. McGinniss continues to push the boundaries of Shell Shock™, and other Smooth-On materials truly taking them into the next level of fine art creation.
